WRITING THE PASSION PROJECT

Saturday June 26 - 9am to 7pm
at Writers Guild of America west, 7000 w. Third Street, Los Angeles 90048

A one-day mini-conference which will examine the tension between art and commerce, the price to be paid (or not!) for following your passion and the imperatives of making a living as a writer. Breakout groups will allow participants to interact in small groups with a professional screenwriter as leader. Purchase Tickets Here!

Panelists/Speakers (to date -subject to availability): Albert Berger - producer; Callie Khouri (Thelma & Louise); Jim Kouf (Stakeout), Robert Nelson Jacobs (Chocolat), Dan Petrie Jr. (Beverly Hills Cop), Howard Rodman (Savage Grace), David Saunders - ATA agent; Tom Schulman (Dead Poets Society), Robin Swicord (Little Women); James Vanderbilt (Zodiac); plus others TBA.

9:30 am: FOR LOVE OR MONEY: THE PASSION PROJECT: Panel
Is there a place in today’s climate for the “passion project?” What are the options for a writer with such a project? Is passion enough? How can one tell if one’s project has legs? How does one keep it alive? Who can help along the way?

11:30 am: CASE STUDIES: Breakout groups.
Writers will talk about passion projects that they have managed to get made. What was the journey? What worked? What didn’t? What would they do differently? (Projects to be advised.)

2:30 pm: WHAT’S YOUR PASSION? Breakout groups
Participants will have the opportunity to discuss in general terms a project they are working on, and get advice from the group leaders.*

4:30 pm: FOR LOVE OR MONEY: MAKING A LIVING AS A WRITER: Panel
Can one make a living with passion projects? Or how does one survive while getting one’s passion project made? Can one follow one’s heart and still survive as a writer? Is there a balance to be found? Does one write what one loves or love what one writes? What are the survival tricks our panelists have learned over the years?
