FREE ALTERNATIVE TO SELF-PUBLISHING

Launch Christian Publishing Community on authonomy.com, HarperCollins' Unique Website

Authors of unsolicited manuscripts will no longer see their work returned to them with a "Thanks-but-no-thanks" letter from Christian publishers like Zondervan and Baker Publishing Group. Instead, they will receive a letter or email encouraging them to post their manuscripts, free-of-charge, on authonomy.com/Christian.

"authonomy.com allows authors to quickly get valuable feedback from consumers on the relevance of their work and gain traction in the market without giving up any of their publishing rights," said Steve Sammons, Zondervan's executive vice president of Consumer Engagement. "It takes only five quick steps to get a manuscript on the authonomy.com site, and you start getting feedback on your manuscript quickly without the usual weeks or months of waiting and hoping."

authonomy.com is a unique free online service that connects readers, writers and publishing professionals. It invites authors to post their manuscripts for visitors to read online. Authors create their own personal page on the site to host their project. Visitors to the site can and will comment on these submissions -- and they personally recommend their favorites to the community. authonomy.com counts the number of recommendations each book receives, and uses it to rank the books on the site. It also spots which visitors consistently recommend the best books -- and uses that info to rank the most influential trend spotters.

"We believe the strength of authonomy.com is that it allows authors, free-of-charge, the ability to get honest feedback from readers, editors and agents as to the relevance and quality of their work," said Dwight Baker, president of Baker Publishing Group. "That is why we feel the combination of features offered by authonomy.com will provide authors the largest audience, exposure and best potential entrée into the world of publishing."

Not only will Zondervan and Baker promote the authonomy.com site to agents and other Christian publishers, their editors, as part of their editorial review process will track and review those books in the Christian section of authonomy.com that have the highest rankings and provide feedback to the authors.

authonomy.com was created as a better way to access the best new work out there based on real customer input. Thousands of manuscripts come through publishers' door every year and authonomy.com is a great tool for improving an author's work and increasing his or her chances to be discovered by avid readers, editors and agents.

authonomy.com completely levels the playing field for a profession that heretofore was dependant on who- you-know or who-you-are. For the authors, the best part is that it is not just Baker and Zondervan looking for promising books; the site is open to other publishing houses and agents. Zondervan or Baker won't ask for a 'first option' to publish or take away any of rights of ownership, and the author can continue to submit to publishers and agents by other methods.

To learn more visit the authonomy.com website at: www.authonomy.com/Christian.

COPYRIGHT INFO FOR ONLINE-ONLY WORKS

Copyright Office Adopts Interim Regulation on Mandatory Deposit Governing Certain Works Published Only Online

The Copyright Office is adopting an interim regulation governing mandatory deposit of electronic works published in the United States and available only online. The regulation establishes that online-only works (those without a physical version) are exempt from mandatory deposit until a demand for deposit of copies or phonorecords of such works is issued by the Copyright Office. It also states that categories of online-only works subject to demand will first be identified in the regulations, and it names electronic serials as the first category for which demands will issue. In addition, the regulation sets forth the process for issuing and responding to a demand for deposit, amends the definition of a “complete copy” of a work for purposes of mandatory deposit of online-only works, and establishes best edition criteria for electronic serials available only online. This interim regulation is effective on February 24, 2010. Further comment on its implementation will be sought later in 2010.

For further information, go to the Copyright Office website at www.copyright.gov.

HIGHLIGHTS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Once upon a time . . .

As children’s writers (or illustrators) that line probably sends your mind on a journey—a journey toward a new story. Before you rush off to get something down on paper, let me share more of this story.

Once upon a time I was a wife and mom and would-be children’s writer living in the Pacific Northwest. Every year, I sent off a request for a report on the previous summer’s Highlights Foundation Writers Workshop at Chautauqua. Every year I poured over the excerpts from workshops taught by such icons as Jerry Spinelli and Patricia Lee Gauch. I looked at photos of faculty members interacting with participants: chatting on benches, eating ice-cream cones, strolling down brick-cobbled paths. I can’t tell you how many times I imagined myself at Chautauqua or how much I longed to go there and learn what I needed to know to reach my goals as a children’s writer.

What I can tell you is this—I never went, at least not as a student. Why not? Because I thought I couldn’t afford to go. You see, somehow I missed one essential bit of information: the Highlights Foundation offers scholarships!

There’s no doubt I would have met the criteria:

1. You must have a serious interest in writing for children.
2. You must have an established financial need.

If you’ve read this far in the e-mail, I’m confident that you’re serious about writing for children. If you long to attend Chautauqua as much as I did, it’s likely that financial concerns have stopped you. Now you know—they don’t have to.

It took me two master’s degrees and eight years of editorial experience to finally get to Chautauqua, but I’ve been blessed to serve on the faculty for seven years. If I’d known back then what I know today, I wouldn’t have wasted a moment getting my scholarship application in the mail. Now that you know, don’t wait. Make 2010 the year you go after your dream of writing (or illustrating) for children. Be sure to say hello when you get to Chautauqua. I’ll be looking forward to meeting you there!

Sincerely,
Kim T. Griswell
Senior Editor

This year, our judging process began with 472 titles submitted by 72 publishers. CT editors selected finalists in each category, and then our expert judges sorted out the best of the bunch from 2009. Here are the 12 winners (including two ties) and 11 notables that best shed light on the people, events, and ideas that shape evangelical life, thought, and mission.

An online link to the awards--including judges' comments and other resources--will be posted on January 22 at www.christianitytoday.com/go/bookawards.

2010 CHRISTIAN WRITING CONTEST

2010 Christian Writing Contest Promotes Evangelizing through Story

Athanatos Christian Ministry's 2010 Christian writing contest is taking applications through February 15th. This is the second of their annual contest and with the addition of a poetry category is set to disburse more than $2,000 in awards, plus publishing the winners in an anthology. Every entrant receives a copy of the anthology for the price of their entry as part of ACM's effort to spur writers on to excellence.

The website for entering and more information is www.christianwritingcontest.com.

Athanatos Christian Ministry is an apologetics organization with a unique emphasis. Rather than only defending the faith through conventional arguments about philosophy, theology, and evidence, ACM understands the role of 'soft' apologetics in touching the human heart.

"Many intellectual objections at bottom are emotional objections," Executive Director Anthony Horvath explains, "but that isn't to say that just because they are emotional they are meritless. For example, Christians are the first to feel sick to their stomachs about the idea that so many people will perish eternally. Like Job, it is easy to say that it is better to have never been born. There are intellectual responses to this but those of us who are parents have already confronted such realities: we have children, knowing for certain that grief and suffering awaits either us or our children on account of the reality of death. We do not conclude there is no point in having children. We see instead that the joy of having them outweighs someone's inevitable sorrow. So, in apologetics we can tap into these experiences that most of us have gone through to help overcome our intellectual objections."

To that end, ACM pursues other avenues to defend the Gospel, like for example through the arts, and literature in particular.

"It is a simple reality that we resonate with a good story and that we are willing to consider new ideas in the course of receiving that story. A Christian author doesn't even have to explicitly present the Gospel in order to advance aspects of the Christian world view or tackle objections," Horvath says.

ACM's 2010 Christian writing contest is accepting entries through February 15th and will announce this year's winners in April. There is a category for high school students, another for those 19 and up, and a newly added one for poetry.

WEBINAR ON FICTION

Jerry Jenkins says:

I first heard Dr. Dennis Hensley speak more than 30 years ago, and I still remember what he said. That’s why he’s spoken at nearly every Christian Writers Guild event and why he was one of the first I asked to join our editorial board.

He runs the professional writing program at Taylor University, which I consider the best available. Dianna and I personally support the program with scholarships and in other tangible ways.

Doc Hensley is hosting our next CWG Webinar, January 21, 2010, from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time).

I’m on vacation in Hawaii, but I’ll be listening in. Trust me, it’ll be worth every penny.

Join us for a Webinar on January 21. Space is limited.
Reserve your Webinar seat now at:
https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/225315610

Readers need a sense of place and time when they read fiction, but too often writers do a poor job of establishing either. In this session, Dr. Hensley will explain how to make your scene descriptions vivid by understanding the cultural elements of an area, regional concepts and visual aspects and how architecture, clothing, landscape, and styles of dress can convey a character's background and behaviors. This session will be enlightening to fiction writers of all genres.
