EBOOKS FUEL GROWTH IN TRADE PUBLISHING

Fueled by a year of strong new releases and even more widespread popularity of e-books, BookStats reports that trade publishing (adult and juvenile fiction and nonfiction, and religion) experienced significant growth in calendar year 2012. While the US book industry remained relatively flat overall in 2012 at $27.1B, the trade sector grew significantly from $14.08B to $15.049B.This growth occurred despite the loss of numerous brick-and-mortar stores and a lower cost for e-books than print books, which translated to higher quantities of e-books sold. The consistent growth of e-books demonstrates that publishers have successfully evolved the technology environment for their content -- more so than other historically print-based content industries. E-books grew 45% since 2011 and now constitute 20% of the trade market.

PORTALS WRITERS CONFERENCE

Portals Writers Conference
Corban University, Salem, Oregon
June 20–23, 2013

From Gina Ochsner, recipient of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction and one of the conference planners:
“Do you know of any young adults or friends who might be interested in writing, memoir, poetry, slam poetry, film, digital storytelling, photography, music, book-making arts (and much more)? We're trying hard to reach folks who maybe have limited to no experience with writing and/or these art forms, but who are curious or would like the opportunity to find out more. All evening events are free and open to the public, and there will be many door prizes and other fun events happening on campus (tentatively scheduled: a literary scavenger hunt, a museum tour, and a bird-walking tour of the campus).”
Whether you’re a veteran writer or a beginner, unsure whether or not you should even call yourself a word artist, Portals Conference has something for you. Combining the best elements of a writing/spoken word conference and an arts festival, we’re offering over fifteen daily seminars taught by nationally known authors and artists. These classes are designed for artists of all levels, genres and interests. Like Corban University, Portals Writing Conference is actively rooted in a Christian perspective, but its tone is informal, friendly and hospitable to those of all walks of faith.
Faculty includes David Sanford, Linda Clare, David Jacobsen, Colette Tennant, and about ten other professionals in various fields. Classes cover fiction, nonfiction, photography, poetry, film-making, and more.

CROSSWAY HEADQUARTERS FLOODED

As you may have heard, a flood recently swept through Crossway's headquarters. About two feet of water poured into our 32 first-floor offices due to unrelenting rains. The damage was extensive and repairs and rebuilding will take five or six months. You can see the damage here in this video.

More important, however, is the impact this could have on major ministry projects that we have planned.
As a not-for-profit ministry, Crossway is not only committed to publishing the ESV Bible and gospel-centered content, but also to providing God's Word to hundreds of thousands of people overseas, either free or at a substantially reduced cost. Because of the recent flood, however, some of these international ministry efforts are now at risk.

MARK WINZ PRESIDENT-ELECT AT EPA

Mark Winz, editor of Worldwide Challenge magazine, was elected to the position of president-elect by the Evangelical Press Association during the May 3, 2013 business meeting. He will serve two years as president-elect, and then become president for a two-year term.

Winz says, "In the last few years we've moved from weekly or monthly print deadlines into a world where yesterday's tweet is old news. We need to help each other learn how to use digital tools, alongside our traditional methods, to get the life-changing message of Christ's desperate love to a world becoming more and more actively disinterested in Him. And we need to use those tools to mobilize the believers we serve through our publications so they can each play a role in proclaiming that message of love."

He adds, "I hope to help you through the EPA by finding excellent training so we can proclaim our message more powerfully, to seek methods we can use to connect more clearly so we can learn from each other, and to offer ways for you hone your skills so you can communicate more effectively with limited resources."

EPA UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE

The Evangelical Press Association unveiled a new website and new domain name during the 2013 business meeting, held May 3 in Nashville. The site was created by the Blackstone Media Group. The new URL is:www.evangelicalpress.com
