2010-2011 ESSAY COMPETITION

The SEVEN Fund (SEVEN) is pleased to announce its 2010-11 Essay Competition in partnership with the Washington DC-based Center For Interfaith Action on Global Poverty (CIFA). We are seeking essays on enterprise solutions to poverty from around the globe that are faith-based, faith-inspired, or interfaith efforts. The competition will award two (2) prizes of US $5,000. The submission deadline is October 15, 2010 at midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST). Winners will be announced on December 15, 2010.

Writers are asked to submit a first-person narrative describing enterprise solutions to poverty that are faith-based, faith-inspired, or interfaith efforts. Illustrations may come from any domain, including healthcare, education, consumer products, human rights, and others; examples must represent innovative private solutions to public problems.

SEVEN (the Social Equity Venture Fund) is a virtual non-profit entity run by entrepreneurs whose strategy is to markedly increase the rate of innovation and diffusion of enterprise-based solutions to poverty. It does this through targeted investment that fosters thought leadership through books, films and websites; supporting role models - whether they are entrepreneurs or innovative firms - in developing nations; and shaping a new discourse in government, the press and the academy around private-sector innovation, prosperity, and progressive human values.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have. We sincerely hope that you will consider participating in the publication and mission of our 2010-11 essay competition.

CTI RELEASES DOWNLOADABLE CHILDREN'S CURRICULUM

A ministry of Christianity Today Intl., TodaysChildrensMinistry.com announces its release of new downloadable curriculum for children's ministry. The curriculum is made up of contributions from children's ministry leaders and the editorial staff of TodaysChildrensMinistry.com. Creative, innovative, and biblically sound, each curriculum's format is adaptable to a variety of ministry settings.
CAROL STREAM, Ill., Aug. 18 /Christian Newswire/ -- TodaysChildrensMinistry.com, a web resource of Christianity Today International, has released its first downloadable, children's ministry curriculum. The curriculum is easily accessed from the website as creatively designed PDF files, which can be printed and used in any teaching situation.

TodaysChildrensMinistry.com has released two new curriculum downloads to date, with more on the way, says site editor Drew Dyck, "There's a lot more coming. We're surveying the landscape of children's ministry, working with a number of churches, selecting the top curricula, and offering it at an extremely affordable price." The versatile content of the curriculum isn't the only attractive feature.

"The PDF format is ideal for use in a variety of settings. Ministry leaders can simply download the file, print and pass out copies, or use right off any computer screen and projector." The curriculum is also conveniently broken up into different sessions. Leaders can teach either by the suggested sessions, or change the amount of material covered each meeting, depending on the group. Some curricula will even have adjoining teaching videos.

Unlike curricula on other websites, this draws upon many different sources, and can be used in multiple settings and with different age groups. "We are constantly keeping our eyes open for unique, relevant, and field-tested content that will help children and middle school students better understand what the Bible is about and how to apply it to their lives" says special projects editor Chris Lutes.

The first two curricula, which have been released on TodaysChildrensMinistry.com, are entitled How to Read the Bible and The Great Joy Rush. Their themes are hermeneutics for kids, and lessons from the Book of Philippians, respectively.

NEW MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION SERVICE

Bowker, the global leader in bibliographic information, has launched an automated manuscript submission process for the general trade.

BowkerManuscriptSubmissions.com (BMS) is an Internet-based service that enables authors to be seen by publishers and ensures publishers don’t miss the next bestseller. BMS brings authors, publishers and agents together in an efficient online system, where authors present their book proposals to the leading publishers in the industry from one central location and acquisition editors apply e-tools that allow them to sort through them and zero in on the ideas they find most interesting.

BowkerManuscriptSubmissions.com is patterned after the highly successful ChristianManuscriptSubmissions.com (CMS) managed by and in cooperation with the Christian publishers association, ECPA. The CMS service which has been in operation for nearly 10 years has proven to be a successful process for both authors and publishers. It provides authors a significantly more cost-efficient manner for submitting a manuscript to multiple publishers, while editors gain electronic tools to quickly, effectively sift many submissions based on the specific search criteria. In fact, the CMS service just recently received accolades in the Christian industry having provided the means for Harvest House Publishers to discover and publish this year’s top Christian fiction book award winner from a manuscript submitted by Susan Meissner.

“With all of the automation underway in our industry, the traditional process of getting the right author together with the right publisher is still incredibly time-consuming and frustrating for both sides of the relationship,” said Kelly Gallagher, VP of Publishing Services. “Authors spend time and money sending out many proposals, hoping to be noticed. While on the flipside, acquisition editors are overwhelmed with unsolicited manuscripts that don’t match their interests.

BowkerManuscriptSubmission.com applies a proven model for addressing both issues, allowing authors and publishers to find each other very efficiently.”

Using a simple, intuitive Web site, authors, for a nominal fee, have the potential to present their book proposal to a vast number of publishers and agents through one connecting point. The Web site guides them through a process that allows them to add a sample chapter so editors can get a taste for their style, and descriptors that will help the right acquisition editors find the proposal. The site even includes resources to polish and refine their work. Additionally, authors have the option to decide whether to expose their manuscript to ‘pay to publish’ companies versus traditional royalty based publishers. Publishers can then use the automated system to explore submitted manuscript proposals, sorting them by genre, audience, author, and date of entry – all at no charge to traditional publishers.

“This is a particularly exciting venture for us because it ends a traditional, industry-wide frustration,” said Mr. Gallagher. “This has the potential to be life-changing for both authors and publishers.”

Interested authors should send an email to BMS@bowker.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Publishers are encouraged to register now at www.BowkerManuscriptSubmissions.com.

BARNES & NOBLE FOR SALE

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that New York-based company Barnes & Noble is up for sale, according to the article, “succumbing to pressure from shareholder activists as digital books erode the traditional business of the nation’s largest bookstore chain.”

Apparently, the company told WSJ that its founder and chairman, Leonard Riggio, is considering forming an investor group to buy Barnes & Noble. The company currently has 720 stores and sells approximately 300 million books annually.

The article reports that “Barnes & Noble has a market capitalization of just under $950 million—even after a 25% run-up in after-hours trading Tuesday [August 3, 2010] in the wake of the announcement. In comparison, chief competitor Amazon.com Inc. has a market cap of around $55 billion. In 2001, Barnes & Noble was worth $2.2 billion and Amazon $3.6 billion.”
