CANADIAN CHRISTIAN WRITING AWARDS

Non-fiction books by Toronto poverty activists Tim Huff and Greg Paul won multiple awards June 17 in a national contest, along with a suspense novel set during the Roman Empire.

The Canadian Christian Writing Awards are given annually in 30 independently judged categories, including non-fiction books, novels, articles, columns and poems. The awards are sponsored by The Word Guild, a national association with the mandate of connecting, developing and promoting Canadian writers and editors who are Christian ( www.thewordguild.com 519-886-4196).

Huff, a social activist who has worked for 20 years with homeless and marginalized youth and adults, won for Bent Hope: A Street Journal (Castle Quay Books) in the general readership category and tied for first in the culture book category with Greg Paul. Paul, who founded the inner-city ministry Sanctuary, also won the Christian living book category for The Twenty Piece Shuffle: Why the Poor and Rich Need Each Other (David C. Cook).

The suspense novel Christianus Sum (Latin for "I am a Christian") won awards in three categories -- best suspense, romance and historical novel -- for first- time author Shawn J. Pollett of Golden Valley, Ont. (near Parry Sound).

Author and singer/songwriter Carolyn Arends of Surrey, B.C., was shortlisted in five categories -- the most of any writer this year -- and won for best book of "life stories" for Wrestling with Angels: Adventures in Faith and Doubt (Harvest House Publishers).

Donna Dawson of St. Marys, Ont., author of the suspense thriller Vengeance (Word Alive Press) and a writing instructor at Fanshawe College in London, Ont., won for best contemporary novel and best independently published fiction.

The cash awards were announced at a public black- tie gala event June 17 in Mississauga, Ont., hosted by Herbie Kuhn, in-house announcer for the Toronto Raptors basketball team.

"This is the premier event honouring the work of Canadians who write from a Christian worldview," explained Denise Rumble, the managing director of The Word Guild. "We want to showcase examples of excellence and increase public awareness of the quality and variety of our homegrown writers."

The complete list of winners is at www.thewordguild.com/contestsawards/2009winners.html

The Word Guild also sponsors Canada's largest Christian writers' conference ( www.writecanada.org).

NEW ANGLICAN CHURCH GROUP FORMS

Following years of preparation, evangelical, charismatic and catholic Anglicans from across North America, many of them recently departed from the Episcopal Church, convened in Texas today to formally launch the new Anglican Church in North America (ACNA). ACNA unites 28 Anglican dioceses under a single Archbishop and positions itself as an alternative to the U.S. Episcopal Church within the global Anglican Communion.

"It's a new day," Bishop Robert Duncan of the Diocese of Pittsburgh told a standing-room only crowd packed into St. Vincent's Cathedral, gathering for the organizing assembly of the 100,000-member church. The new denomination is working to be recognized as part of the 80-million member global Anglican Communion. Many of the overseas Anglican churches have sent observers to the assembly, including, but not limited to, African churches that have supported the denominational enterprise. Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams has sent an observer, known as a pastoral visitor, Retired Seychelles Bishop Santosh Marray of the Province of the Indian Ocean.

Ecumenical speakers including Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church in California and Metropolitan Jonah of the Orthodox Church in America will offer keynote addresses later this week.

The Anglican Communion is divided over hot button issues like homosexuality and scriptural authority, with U.S. Episcopal church leaders being more theologically and politically liberal than their overseas counterparts.

IRD Director of Anglican Action Jeff Walton commented,

"This new Anglican movement in North America is easily the largest North American denomination to come into existence since the 1970s.

"The ACNA is remarkable not because it is splitting off from an existing church, but because it is uniting multiple churches. After over 30 years of splintering, traditionalist Anglicans are setting aside many of their differences in order to pursue common mission.

"This is clearly not a schismatic quest for purity by a small group of discontents. Rather, it is a theologically diverse group that sees how much is held in common."

WORLD'S "BOOK OF THE YEAR"

WORLD Magazine has named the English Standard Version Study Bible, published by Crossway Books, as its "Book of the Year." That recognition will be included in 21 pages of coverage of the book world in WORLD's 2009 Books Issue, to be released June 19.

In naming the ESV Study Bible its "Book of the Year," WORLD Magazine's Editor-in-Chief Marvin Olasky writes: "It adds to the accuracy and readability of the ESV 20,000 notes based on top evangelical scholarship, 80,000 cross references, 400 maps and charts, and much more, all under the supervision of two splendid theologians, Wayne Grudem and J.I. Packer." Olasky goes on to call the notes and commentary "informative throughout and spectacular in parts."

Olasky said picking a Bible as the "Book of the Year" might strike some people as odd, perhaps even a trivialization of the Bible, which Christians believe is a book that stands in a class by itself. Olasky responded: "The Bible is the book for all years; this study Bible is a particular winner in the year of our Lord 2009."

HOW THE INDUSTRY IS CHANGING

I participated in a teleseminar recently, and one of the questions I was asked was how the industry was changing. I’m not sure what I answered off the top of my head, but I’ve been thinking about it since then. Just like all segments of the economy, you see a ripple down effect changing the industry as a whole.
Many bookstores are either closing or having to scale back. That means publishers have fewer places to sell the books they produce. For that reason the publishers are cutting back on the number of titles they publish, as well as the number of copies of each title they print. It also means publishers are laying off employees so it become more important that your manuscript arrives well edited. Even agents are finding it more difficult to find contracts for their clients. That means freelance writers representing themselves may find an even tighter market than in years past.
So, what are freelancers to do? I can suggest a few options. Get even more serious about your marketing efforts. It is even more critical than in the past that you study the market guide to select the best possible choices for your submissions. Be sure to see sample copies or book catalogs and not only get their writers’ guidelines (by mail, e-mail, or Website) but spend enough time reviewing them that you have a good idea of what they are looking for. And follow those guidelines exactly—the publisher doesn’t have the time or employees to make your submission fit their needs. And finally, don’t give up. If you can’t make a sale right now, spend the time becoming the best writer you can be.

SERMONS NEEDED FOR BOOK

Christian Archives ( www.christianarchives.org) recently announced plans to publish a collectible book of sermons. The sermon archive website is currently seeking sermon manuscripts to consider for inclusion in the book.

The collectible book will be available in November, 2009. The proceeds from the sales of the books will be shared with a national Christian non-profit organization. The annual publication will contain 25 inspirational sermons chosen from materials submitted by Pastors world-wide.

Christian Archives requests that all materials be submitted as a Word .doc and not exceed 2,500 words. All submissions should include the authors name, short bio, church name, sermon title, email and phone. The file and information should be emailed to sermons@christianarchives.org. The submission deadline is July 31, 2009.

In addition to sermon archiving, Christian Archives also provides a custom web page for church members at no cost. Each custom web page is home to the archives of the specific church. The custom web page makes it easy for churches to seamlessly link their websites to their archives, and back again. If a church does not have a website they can also use their custom web page as their website.

The concept of the book was developed as the demand for online sermons has grown. Asking Pastors for contributions seemed to be a logical way to extend the benefits of Christian Archives to Christians everywhere.

INNOVATIVE FILM WORKSHOP IN JULY

Advent Film Group (AFG), the producer of the bestselling Christian movie, COME WHAT MAY, is offering a unique Two-Day Film Workshop in Purcellville, Virginia, July 18-19, 2009. "Unlike other film programs, our approach is not focused on the filmmaker at all," explains George Escobar, founder of AFG. "We intentionally aim to turn filmmakers' focus away from themselves. We want them centered on learning what God is doing in their community. That's the source for great stories, which God wants told. It's also the means by which the movie can be financed and distributed."

This new model was birthed by the success of recent films such as FACING THE GIANTS, FIREPROOF, and THE WIDOW'S MIGHT, according to Mike Snyder, former Senior VP of Prison Fellowship, who recently joined AFG to lead business affairs and marketing.

"We take our inspiration from the vantage point of where God is working in people's lives," Snyder says. "We do our best to make 'His' stories, not our own. We want to reach audiences whom God has prepared. More importantly, we acknowledge His sovereignty in shaping culture for His glory. He knows which stories are enduring, have lasting values--the stories that matter."

AFG used this new model during the making and release of COME WHAT MAY. This spring AFG also field-tested the film workshop at conferences held across the country, including New Mexico, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Virginia, and Florida.

Workshop attendees say: "It's off-the-chart good, more than I hoped for." "The depth and emphasis placed on a personal relationship with God and serving where you are now was amazing and refreshing." "I was impressed that the focus was on the relationship with Christ, not just how to make a movie." "Gave me hope for the future of the film industry."

The workshop is ideal for students and parents considering film as a vocation. Attendees will learn the advantages and disadvantages of film schools. It also covers the elements for making and distributing movies from start-to-finish. This workshop will benefit adults (with film experience or not) looking to switch careers or bolster their media ministry toward feature filmmaking. AFG will reveal their next projects and how attendees can get involved. Registration is limited. Go to: www.adventfilmgroup.com/workshop to register.

SPECIAL MARKET GUIDE OFFER

Writers! Those that have been following me for some time will remember that last year I made a special offer to my blog followers. If you missed it, I have had a program for years that if you sign up to get the Christian Writers' Market Guide automatically every year as soon as it comes out (first of January), you can freeze the price at the current level no matter how much the price goes up in the future. So here is where the special comes in. Every year I lose a certain number of those automatic orders through death, retirement, economic reasons, etc., so I am willing to let others pick those up at the rate those earlier customers were paying. (Those automatic orders range from $16.95-$24.99.)This offer is on a first-come-first-serve basis--those who are first to respond will get the lower prices.

The prices are plus postage. If you are intersted, just e-mail me your interest and I will respond with the lowest rate available at that time (realize that even at $24.99 it is $10 below the current price). You can then let me know right away if you want to accept the offer at that level. Also indicate if you have the 2009 edition or you want me to send a copy. Thanks--Sally stuartcwmg@aol.com.
