The authors of Novel Matters (Sharon K. Souza, Debbie Fuller Thomas, Latayne C. Scott, Patti Hill, Kathleen Popa, and Bonnie Grove), together with the authors and brilliant minds behind She Reads (Ariel Allison and Marybeth Whalen) announce a partnership designed to bring writers and readers together in a new, dynamic way.
She Reads blog is all about “Discovering Great Fiction Together”. Their motto is: The proper care and feeding of readers. Since their inception, She Reads has reached out to the reading community and provided a place for discussion, book clubs, events, contests, and arranged ‘close encounters’ for readers and writers to connect. Each quarter, She Reads chooses three “picks” to share with their readership. They are part of Proverbs 31 Ministries – an important and dynamic ministry to and for women.
Novel Matters blog is a community that celebrates the creative process of writing. We explore what matters in novels. We are six published authors – our combined books number 27. We have teamed to build a community populated by authors, writers, hopeful writers, readers, and people interested in the different ways of expressing creativity, language, and ideas.
What the partnership will look like:
Each site of course will maintain its own identity, as a readers' community and a writers' community.
Twice a month, an author from Novel Matters will post on the She Reads blog, giving insight to the creative process, answer reader questions, and revel in our shared love of books and reading. Yes, Novel Matters is populated with authors, but each author is also an avid reader. We devour books and love to talk about our reading experiences.
Once a month, an author from She Reads will post on Novel Matters – bringing a wealth of insight on how authors can reach readers. This goes beyond marketing tips. The instruction they bring will help authors build trust with readers, and touch their hearts.
She Reads and Novel Matters are dreaming big dreams -- of glimpses into each others' worlds -- a place of community where you Read Novels -- where the She of each of you truly Matters to authors who care about their craft and their readers.

2009 ECPA BOOK COVER AWARDS
The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) announces today the winners of the 2009 ECPA | dp Book Cover Award. The competition, sponsored by ECPA and Dickinson Press, recognizes the industry’s most on-target book covers that intentionally and intelligently connect the cover’s design components to their intended consumer. The program is based on RISC consumer research that identifies four primary consumer profile groups and their buying patterns and motivations.
The most common consumer profile targeted among this year’s entries was “Inclusives” – those who are open to change, community-oriented, and favor diversity, well-being and cultural experiences. “This consumer prefers bright colors, bold fonts, optimistic images and a sense of order,” says Rick Hamm, Director of RISC Research at Marshall Marketing and the award program’s judging manager. “Three of the four profiles are represented in the list of winners. Each did an exemplary job in tailoring their design to their target audience and we are very pleased to award them the honor of an ECPA | dp Book Cover Award.”
The 2009 ECPA | dp Book Cover Award Winners in each category are:
BEST COVER: BIBLES
HCSB Ultrathin Bible in Varsity Colors
Holman Bible Editorial Staff (B&H Publishing), Greg Pope, Art Director; Roy Roper, Designer
BEST COVER: SMALL-SIZED PUBLISHER
Your Intercultural Marriage
Marla Alupoaicei (Moody Publishers), Smartt Guys, Designer
BEST COVER: MID-SIZED PUBLISHER
Taking a Stand for the Bible
John Ankerberg and Dillon Burroughs (Harvest House Publishers), Dugan Design Group, Designer
BEST COVER: LARGE PUBLISHER
Deliberate Simplicity
Dave Browning (Zondervan), Rob Monacelli, Designer
Fourteen ECPA member publishers submitted a record number of 94 covers for consideration in this year’s competition. The winners were announced today at a PUBu online webinar where Hamm expounded on the RISC consumer research and how each winner was chosen. A download of that webinar is available on the ECPA website. Also available for download is the webinar, The Science Behind Great Book Cover Design: Connecting with your Consumer.
“The ECPA | dp Book Cover Award encourages, identifies and celebrates outstanding design in Christian publishing and we extend our congratulations to each of the winning publishers and their marketing, editorial and design teams for producing the most on-target covers of the year,” expressed ECPA President and CEO Mark Kuyper.

TIM LAHAYE SIGNS NEW CONTRACT
Zondervan, a world leader in Christian communications, has signed an agreement with attorney Craig Parshall and Tim LaHaye, creator and co-author of the world renowned Left Behind series. Three years after the success of the Left Behind final installment, LaHaye returns to publish Edge of Apocalypse, an apocalyptic epic infused with political intrigue ripped from today's headlines, the first book in a new series called The End.
"I'm thrilled to partner with Zondervan to produce a series hopefully even more innovative than Left Behind," said LaHaye. "While my past works have piqued interest in biblical prophecy on a global level, The End series includes many prophecies that were not covered in Left Behind."
Edge of Apocalypse jumpstarts the series as military- hero-turned-inventor Joshua Jordan attempts to save Manhattan from two nuclear missiles. Using his Return to Sender military defense system, Jordan finds himself facing an unbearable ransom to the nation he loves. As tensions escalate and global alliances topple, only Jordan and a secret group known only as The Patriots can save the United States from terrorists abroad and traitors within.
Set in the very near future, The End series chronicles the earth shattering events which eventually lead up to the Rapture and the beginning of the prophesied Last Days of mankind.
Edge of Apocalypse will release worldwide on April 20, 2010 with a first print run of 500,000 copies.

UK MARKET FOR CHRISTIAN BOOKS
I just wanted to let you know about Sunpenny Publishing and our new imprint, Rose & Crown Books.
Rose & Crown is specifically for Christian Romance books, and we run a New Novels competition annually, too. We are launching with our new books in spring of 2010, some of which are the results of our first competition. We are the first and only (to our knowledge) publisher to be trying to bring this genre to the United Kingdom, where we are based.
Sunpenny itself takes Christian books, too, as well as secular; we are looking at both fiction and non-fiction. We recently published a book by the renowned Welsh missionary, father of Nations.org and World Horizons – My Sea is Wide, and we are about to release a Christian novel called Going Astray.
We also have another imprint, Sunberry Books, which does author services (from critiques to proofing and editing services, or all the way to self-publishing).
(If you are interested in looking further, our web sites are in my signature below.)

JERRY JENKINS ANNOUNCES WEBINAR
At the Christian Writers Guild, tomorrow evening at 8 Eastern Time, we’re offering a live Webinar of one of our most popular workshops. We call it the Thick-Skinned Manuscript Critique, in which I show actual editing on anonymous manuscript submissions. Writers at our annual conferences consistently tell us this is a most-helpful approach, because editors don’t have the time (or the responsibility) to tell them what is specifically wrong with the manuscripts they reject.
Here I do just that. Doing a heavy edit and re-write (and brief commentary) on the first two pages of each of 6 different submissions, I walk you through what an editor would do if he or she had the time or the responsibility to tell the truth about the writing itself. Their job is to find publishable, purchasable material. At the Guild, we feel it’s our responsibility – and most helpful – to be specific and say why something is working or not working, salable or not salable.
If you’d like to sit in and watch on screen, I think you’ll find it valuable to your own writing. You’ll have the ability to interact too, asking questions live.
CWG member cost is $25; non-member cost is $45, and we’ll go for an hour or a little more.
Remember, this is set for tomorrow night, Tuesday, November 10, at 8 p.m., Eastern Time. You’ll see my smiling mug during the intro, then you’ll see the manuscripts and what has been done to them, then me again for the Q&A session.
The best way to get in on this at this late date is to contact the Christian Writers Guild directly, either by email (ContactUs@ChristianWritersGuild.com) or by calling (866) 495-5177 and asking for Janice or Leilani.

JAMES DOBSON LEAVES RADIO MINISTRY
Focus on the Family Founder and Chairman Emeritus James C. Dobson, Ph.D., will leave the ministry as its primary radio voice at the end of February, the ministry announced today.
Dr. Dobson's departure from the radio program and from official affiliation with the organization he founded in 1977 is just the "third chapter in a transition that began in 2003," when Dr. Dobson stepped down as Focus president, said Jim Daly, the ministry's president and CEO. It was a mutual decision between Dr. Dobson and the ministry's board of directors, which Dr. Dobson left in February of this year, Daly added.

BETHANY PRESS LAUNCHES BELIEVERSPRESS
Authors face an enormous challenge; a one in thousands chance of getting their manuscript published by major Christian publishers. Until now, the industry has only offered authors royalty and self-publishing models. Rejected authors are often left to fend for themselves. Some talented authors will give up. Others will try to solo-navigate the shifting currents of self/subsidy publishing and find themselves limited by the one-size-fits-all approach of these services.
BelieversPress, a new venture just launched by Bethany Press, offers multiple publishing tracks for authors where they control the process.
1. Royalty Publishing
In collaboration with ECPA, BelieversPress critiques and edits author proposals prior to posting on the ChristianManuscriptSubmissions.com website enabling agents and publishers to sort and filter for high quality submissions. Each of these proposals features a BelieversPress badge.
2. Independent Publishing
At BelieversPress, professional authors who pursue independent publishing can now access
Coaching and editorial services from Jeff Gerke, (longtime editor for the CBA industry, former editor at NavPress) and Barb Lilland Editorial Services (former senior editor, Bethany House Publishing)
Cover design from The DesignWorks Group or Dugan Design
Publicity services from B&B Media (clients include Charles Stanley, John C. Maxwell, Chuck Swindoll, Tim LaHaye, Melody Carlson, Bruce Wilkinson)
Marketing tools from Heinlein Publishing Services (Publishing Professional, 20+ Years: including executive positions with United Methodist Publishing House, Thomas Nelson, and Word Publishing)
Printing from Bethany Press (producer of almost 30% of the best-selling Christian paperbacks)
Sales and distribution through STL Distribution (the largest exclusively Christian distributor in North America).
Authors interested in submitting to agents and small publishers can receive mentoring, editorial, and proposal evaluation from D.C. Jacobson (Don Jacobson's group, former President of Multnomah Publishers) and The Writing Spa (Mary DeMuth) at BelieversPress.
BelieversPress counsels authors that if they cannot sell their books via platforms such as speaking, established ministries, or direct to readers through venues such as blogging, the internet, articles, etc. then they should not self-publish.
Agents and publishers can offer their authors a trustworthy team to help them to publish both their out- of-print books and unpublished manuscripts, further building their readership with the ability to sell directly through the author's website, the BelieversPress E- store, and to the trade through STL Distribution. Or, they can refer authors needing mentoring and further development to trusted professionals who can help them hone their skill and platform before re- submitting.

NAVPRESS OFFERS $5 BOOK DEAL
To help independent Christian retailers in the coming year, NavPress is introducing the $5 Book Deal. Beginning in January and continuing every other month through December 2010, independent Christian stores can purchase that month’s preselected title for $2.75 and then sell it for $5. Every book in the program is a NavPress top seller by a well-known author.
The $5 Book Deal lineup includes The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges (January), Living the Resurrection by Eugene H. Peterson (March), Becoming a Woman of Excellence by Cynthia Heald (May), Dark Blue by Melody Carlson (July), Calm My Anxious Heart by Linda Dillow (September), and Abba’s Child by Brennan Manning (December).
“The $5 price has been the magic number over the past year or two in retail,” explains Eric Helus, NavPress sales manager. “Our yearlong offering helps make a sampling of our best-selling titles available at a price point that will allow the reader who might not be familiar with or interested in buy and read these books. At the same time, retailers can cross promote the $5 books with the respective author’s other titles to increase sales.”

CTI ADD DIGITAL MAGAZINE
Kyria.com has announced the release of the inaugural issue of their monthly digital magazine (digizine), titled "Born Identity: Chosen in Christ. Called to Influence."
In August 2009, Christianity Today International launched Kyria.com, a web-based resource for women who want to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ and in faithfully influencing the people around them to respond to Christ. The new paid- access website combines articles, blogs, downloadable resources, and now this monthly digizine.
Each issue of the Kyria digizine will be devoted to a specific aspect of spiritual formation or a spiritual discipline. Included is an interview with a woman who has devoted herself to becoming more like Christ, as well as practical tools, Bible studies, and challenging commentary.
Editor Ginger Kolbaba says, "Women are such powerhouses in their families, churches, and communities. It's exciting to lead and encourage them into greater depths of their faith through Kyria's resources. It's especially fulfilling to see women embrace the purposes and calling God has on their lives."
The December issue will be titled "The Discipline of Rest," and will feature an interview with Ruth Haley Barton along with other pieces by Keri Wyatt Kent, Brenda Jank, Catherine Hart Weber, and Lauren Winner.
To see the November 2009 issue of Kyria Digizine, visit kyria.com/digital/currentissue.html. To become a charter member of Kyria.com, visit kyria.com/membership.

ECPA MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION SERVICE
Publishers face an enormous challenge, hunting through mountains of submissions to find the few that meet their editorial needs. Finding new voices in this environment can feel impossible. ChristianManuscriptSubmissions.com (CMS), a program of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA), is the only proposal submission website designed at the request of the top Christian publishers to provide a solution to these problems. In collaboration with ECPA, BelieversPress (a subsidiary of Bethany Press International) is pleased to offer authors the opportunity to have their proposals professionally critiqued and edited before submission on the CMS website for viewing by Christian publishers. These proposals will feature a BelieversPress badge enabling publishers to easily find these high quality submissions. Badges will reflect what proposals have been critiqued, edited and endorsed.
CBA PRESIDENT STEPS DOWN
CBA President and CEO Bill Anderson stepped down from his position Friday, Oct. 30. Anderson joined CBA in 1978 from Moody Publishing as the association's first full-time convention manager. He became president in October 1985. Under Anderson's leadership, CBA transitioned from a trade association serving primarily booksellers to one serving constituents who provide a broad range of Christian resources and materials -- including music, gifts, apparel, specialty items, software and other product categories. Anderson has championed CBA in the media, both Christian and secular, and has helped raise awareness of Christian stores and the roles they play in their communities. He serves on numerous industry, ministry, education, leadership, and business organization boards. "Christian Retail has been given a high and holy calling, and we must be faithful to God and His Word. CBA plays a vital role in his industry, and the industry has a vital role in the Kingdom," Anderson said. "It's been an honor to have served here." Additionally, CBA Board Chairman Jim Whittaker of New Life Christian Stores resigned the same day, citing increased time demands that would come along with managing the transition process.
