ASIAN FESTIVAL OF CHILDREN'S CONTENT
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you Asian Festival of Children's Content (AFCC). I work with the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS or Book Council in short) - a nonprofit charitable organisation set up in 1969 and we are organising the first Asian Festival of Children's Content (AFCC) from 6 to 9 May 2010. We are expecting about 300 to 400 delegates from all over Asia, Australia and New Zealand, North America and Europe to attend the event.
NBDCS has been organising the Asian Children's Writers & Illustrators Conference (ACWIC) for the past 10 years and this time will take the lead and launch the inaugural AFCC. The conference will feature new programmes, including the Asian Children's Media Market, Children's Book Award, Children's Writers Award as well as workshops and master classes.
The goals of the Asian Festival of Children's Content are to:
· Develop the writing and the illustrating of Children's stories and content.
· Promote publishing of Asian content.
· Provide the world with access to such material created in Asia.
We hope we would be able to get your support on this by helping to promote AFCC on your website / blog or perhaps put a link to it. The link is: http://www.bookcouncil.sg/newsletters/afcc/eflyer.html.

BIBLERHYMES GOES INTERACTIVE
Bible stories for children may never be the same as BibleRhymes launches its new membership site (www.BibleRhymes.com) with interactive books, games, and more.
BibleRhymes introduced the first of its hardcover children's book series in 2007. It has since released two more books featuring vivid art and unique rhymes that showcase some of the Bible's most popular stories, including the Christmas Story. The original website not only offered samples from the books, but a great deal more free poetry by Ken McCardell, founder and author of BibleRhymes.
But now the company has reinvented itself, still making its hardcovers available while also offering a fully interactive website. The site now includes Bible- based jigsaw puzzles, quiz games, word searches, crosswords, and other video games. In addition, the books have gone digital with lifelike turning pages, animations on every page, sound effects, clickable actions, a built-in dictionary, and optional narration by the author.
To compliment the books and games, there are forums, polls, and other forms of interaction, as well as writing, for parents and older children.
"We wanted to make a clean and entertaining site with something for a wide spectrum of people," says McCardell. "I've had kids from four years old up to teenagers playing our quizzes and painting games already, not to mention my adult editor getting lost in the word searches. And this is just the beginning."
With two interactive e-books so far, hundreds of games, and plenty of ways for people to connect with one another, McCardell still points out that many more books, games, and improvements to the website are coming. Right now, they're setting a strong foundation and direction for all the things they'll bring their members.
"When people see what my team has been working on, they're going to fall in love," he says, noting that free videos show the digital books in action. "Between the music, the animations, the illustrations, the rhymes, and the games all packaged together to make Biblical learning fun, BibleRhymes.com has taken a big step toward becoming an online centerpiece for people of faith."
You can learn more about BibleRhymes and the new website by visiting it online at www.BibleRhymes.com.

YOUTHWORKS! INC. ACQUIRES YOUTH SPECIALTIES
On December 16, 2009, YouthWorks!, Inc.® completed the acquisition of Youth Specialties (YS) from Zondervan. YouthWorks' purchase includes the entire YS brand and the events division; however, the publishing division will continue to operate under Zondervan.
The acquisition blends the ministry of YouthWorks--a multi-denominational family of ministries that plans and implements life-changing, Christ-centered missions trips and ministry experiences--with the complementary work of YS--the international leader in training and equipping youth pastors and youth ministry leaders.
This move realigns YS under the umbrella of the youth ministry-minded organization of YouthWorks, which honors the legacy of the YS founders, positions YS for new success and significantly expands the reach of the YouthWorks family of ministries. YouthWorks currently operates in more than 80 U.S. cities and Canada and has served more than 400,000 participants through 10,000 churches. YS serves more than 10,000 churches and 100,000 youth ministry workers worldwide.
"Both YouthWorks and Youth Specialties were founded to serve the Church by serving youth," said YouthWorks founder and President Paul Bertelson. "We are excited about the complementary aspects each offers and believe the acquisition will enhance both ministries."
For more information on the acquisition visit www.youthworks.com/ys.asp

NEW NEEDS FOR "LOVE IS A FLAME"
Hi Writers,
Sometimes book projects evolve as they go along. That's what's happening with Love is a Flame. While we do want stories of rekindled and dramatically changed marriages, the shift has changed a bit to be more inclusive on the topic of What Makes a Marriage Work.
We'd like to hear a story about something you've learned works in marriage. Tell us about a time when you faced a challenge or conflict and how that was resolved, or a story from your life that illustrates what makes a marriage work. You don't have to talk about an experience of bringing your marriage back from the brink of disaster (although we'd like some of those, too), but we're looking for slices of married life (again, a story about something that happened--not an article or words of marital advice or Bible study, though scripture use is fine), that are focused on one lesson or incident.
Here are ideas of some of the specific topics that we'd love to see covered, too:
*dealing with spouse's pornography
*remarriage--can old dogs learn new tricks?
*marriage in senior years
*dealing with infidelity--physically or emotionally
*dealing with child issues (loss of a child, differing discipline styles, stepchildren, combined front with children, etc.)
*overcoming step family challenges
*learning to forgive your spouse
*what happens when beauty fades
*how does a marriage survive addictions
*overcoming the little vines that spoil the vineyard
*not everyone we're around respects marriage, so dealing with temptations
*being nice to your spouse
*keeping flames alive when boredom sets in
*setting boundaries in marriage
*spiritual life of a married couple; growing together spiritually, dealing with one not being at the same spiritual level, etc.
*sexual issues
*Empty nest
*communication
*surviving lifechanges (menopause, mid-life crisis, depression, etc.)
(using pseudonyms is fine! just put the pen name you'd like to use on the byline below your title)
--Changes you might want to be aware of:
* The powers that be have decreed that besides the payments on the guidelines (attached), stories of over 2000 words (after editing) will net $100 each for the author.
* Since we know you have a busy holiday season, the deadline's been changed to Dec. 31 (although we're delighted to receive them sooner).
To give you an idea of the kinds of thing we're looking for, I've attached a sample story (with the author's permission).
All that said, I hope to hear from you, and hope you get a fresh glimpse of Christ during this fun Christmas season. =)
Thank you!

LOOKING FOR CHRISTMAS STORIES
We're looking for submissions to The Christmas Spirit, the sequel to the
successful "Christmas Miracles" book. We have contracted for this book with St. Martin's Press for the fall of 2011. Best-selling author, Debbie
Macomber, has agreed to write the foreword.
The completed manuscript is due in the spring of 2010.
We seek true stories that emphasize the significance of the Christmas
season. So often, we get caught up in the busy-ness of the season-the
shopping, the family drama, and the event planning-that we lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas. Sometimes, through God's grace or what some call a twist of fate, we're able to step back and grasp the real meaning of
Christmas and our lives are enriched. These are the kind of stories we are
seeking.

ELECTRONIC MAGAZINE NEEDS WRITERS
I know you have resources to let Christian writers know of needs. I have been approached to be in a partnership to produce thepropheticriver.com. PR will be a site hosting an electronic magazine, have radio, television, store, prophetic blogging.....
The magazine will be published I believe weekly and carried on our site, facebook and many other sites. We have the technology to do this and are currently in the process of setting it all up. Looking at something edgy with an appeal to under 40 (although not all of us are under 40). Our slant will be towards a prophetic view and we will have some writers already to contribute.
I am coming to you as we will be needing some on fire writers to help produce an electronic on line magazine - writers interested in a prophetic viewpoint.
This initially will not be a paid position however we are looking to the future with carrying ads and our product to put us in a place where we eventually can pay our writers. So it would at first be an investment on their part. We have several areas from features to music and book chats.
I would appreciate you letting your readers know. Those of interest can respond to me at ginnys@cableone.net
using the line The Prophetic River.

JOB OFFER
Note from Sally: I know nothing about this offer other than what is here. Just passing it along in case someone might be interested.
I AM LOOKING FOR A LIVE-IN NOVEL WRITING INTERN FOR ABOUT 1 YEAR PLEASE.
Can you please see if there's any interest from a (probably young) adult you have contact with?
The internship will be in Malaysia.
HERE'S MY ADVERTISEMENT
Are you addicted to reading quality fiction?
Got a great writing style?
Like creating characters?
Want to write a novel yourself?
Interested in influencing the world political situation for God?
You sound like a GREAT candidate!
Also, can you touch type around 80-100 words per minute?
WOW! You sound like the PERFECT candidate! :-)
Democracy is disintegrating before us.
Dictatorships are usually horrible.
Communism fell.
There are few nations left actually ruled by kings, queens or sultans.
Sharia Law in the hands of Radical Islam is usually oppressive...
So what is the solution?
Ayn Rand wrote Atlas Shrugged to promote Objectivism and the practical outworking of that is Libertarianism.
Alan Greenspan became her fan and some say Ayn was the most influential writer in the 2nd half of the 20th Century!
BUT she missed a critical ingredient!!! THE GOD FACTOR!
I'm a powerful writer - I write sales copy and get $500/page.
I've done a novel writing course but been too busy to do any novel writing.
I have two novels I need written. If you want to be sub-author of a novel or two, please contact me.
It will have similar Political/Economic views to Christian writers Rushdoony/North/DeMar etc
+ spiritual perspective (and hopefully excitement) as Frank Peretti!
No payment BUT it is live-in and we provide room & food.
(btw You'll need to do a day's family duties same as my wife & I do.)

SHE READS/NOVEL MATTERS PARTNERSHIP
The authors of Novel Matters (Sharon K. Souza, Debbie Fuller Thomas, Latayne C. Scott, Patti Hill, Kathleen Popa, and Bonnie Grove), together with the authors and brilliant minds behind She Reads (Ariel Allison and Marybeth Whalen) announce a partnership designed to bring writers and readers together in a new, dynamic way.
She Reads blog is all about “Discovering Great Fiction Together”. Their motto is: The proper care and feeding of readers. Since their inception, She Reads has reached out to the reading community and provided a place for discussion, book clubs, events, contests, and arranged ‘close encounters’ for readers and writers to connect. Each quarter, She Reads chooses three “picks” to share with their readership. They are part of Proverbs 31 Ministries – an important and dynamic ministry to and for women.
Novel Matters blog is a community that celebrates the creative process of writing. We explore what matters in novels. We are six published authors – our combined books number 27. We have teamed to build a community populated by authors, writers, hopeful writers, readers, and people interested in the different ways of expressing creativity, language, and ideas.
What the partnership will look like:
Each site of course will maintain its own identity, as a readers' community and a writers' community.
Twice a month, an author from Novel Matters will post on the She Reads blog, giving insight to the creative process, answer reader questions, and revel in our shared love of books and reading. Yes, Novel Matters is populated with authors, but each author is also an avid reader. We devour books and love to talk about our reading experiences.
Once a month, an author from She Reads will post on Novel Matters – bringing a wealth of insight on how authors can reach readers. This goes beyond marketing tips. The instruction they bring will help authors build trust with readers, and touch their hearts.
She Reads and Novel Matters are dreaming big dreams -- of glimpses into each others' worlds -- a place of community where you Read Novels -- where the She of each of you truly Matters to authors who care about their craft and their readers.

2009 ECPA BOOK COVER AWARDS
The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) announces today the winners of the 2009 ECPA | dp Book Cover Award. The competition, sponsored by ECPA and Dickinson Press, recognizes the industry’s most on-target book covers that intentionally and intelligently connect the cover’s design components to their intended consumer. The program is based on RISC consumer research that identifies four primary consumer profile groups and their buying patterns and motivations.
The most common consumer profile targeted among this year’s entries was “Inclusives” – those who are open to change, community-oriented, and favor diversity, well-being and cultural experiences. “This consumer prefers bright colors, bold fonts, optimistic images and a sense of order,” says Rick Hamm, Director of RISC Research at Marshall Marketing and the award program’s judging manager. “Three of the four profiles are represented in the list of winners. Each did an exemplary job in tailoring their design to their target audience and we are very pleased to award them the honor of an ECPA | dp Book Cover Award.”
The 2009 ECPA | dp Book Cover Award Winners in each category are:
BEST COVER: BIBLES
HCSB Ultrathin Bible in Varsity Colors
Holman Bible Editorial Staff (B&H Publishing), Greg Pope, Art Director; Roy Roper, Designer
BEST COVER: SMALL-SIZED PUBLISHER
Your Intercultural Marriage
Marla Alupoaicei (Moody Publishers), Smartt Guys, Designer
BEST COVER: MID-SIZED PUBLISHER
Taking a Stand for the Bible
John Ankerberg and Dillon Burroughs (Harvest House Publishers), Dugan Design Group, Designer
BEST COVER: LARGE PUBLISHER
Deliberate Simplicity
Dave Browning (Zondervan), Rob Monacelli, Designer
Fourteen ECPA member publishers submitted a record number of 94 covers for consideration in this year’s competition. The winners were announced today at a PUBu online webinar where Hamm expounded on the RISC consumer research and how each winner was chosen. A download of that webinar is available on the ECPA website. Also available for download is the webinar, The Science Behind Great Book Cover Design: Connecting with your Consumer.
“The ECPA | dp Book Cover Award encourages, identifies and celebrates outstanding design in Christian publishing and we extend our congratulations to each of the winning publishers and their marketing, editorial and design teams for producing the most on-target covers of the year,” expressed ECPA President and CEO Mark Kuyper.

TIM LAHAYE SIGNS NEW CONTRACT
Zondervan, a world leader in Christian communications, has signed an agreement with attorney Craig Parshall and Tim LaHaye, creator and co-author of the world renowned Left Behind series. Three years after the success of the Left Behind final installment, LaHaye returns to publish Edge of Apocalypse, an apocalyptic epic infused with political intrigue ripped from today's headlines, the first book in a new series called The End.
"I'm thrilled to partner with Zondervan to produce a series hopefully even more innovative than Left Behind," said LaHaye. "While my past works have piqued interest in biblical prophecy on a global level, The End series includes many prophecies that were not covered in Left Behind."
Edge of Apocalypse jumpstarts the series as military- hero-turned-inventor Joshua Jordan attempts to save Manhattan from two nuclear missiles. Using his Return to Sender military defense system, Jordan finds himself facing an unbearable ransom to the nation he loves. As tensions escalate and global alliances topple, only Jordan and a secret group known only as The Patriots can save the United States from terrorists abroad and traitors within.
Set in the very near future, The End series chronicles the earth shattering events which eventually lead up to the Rapture and the beginning of the prophesied Last Days of mankind.
Edge of Apocalypse will release worldwide on April 20, 2010 with a first print run of 500,000 copies.

UK MARKET FOR CHRISTIAN BOOKS
I just wanted to let you know about Sunpenny Publishing and our new imprint, Rose & Crown Books.
Rose & Crown is specifically for Christian Romance books, and we run a New Novels competition annually, too. We are launching with our new books in spring of 2010, some of which are the results of our first competition. We are the first and only (to our knowledge) publisher to be trying to bring this genre to the United Kingdom, where we are based.
Sunpenny itself takes Christian books, too, as well as secular; we are looking at both fiction and non-fiction. We recently published a book by the renowned Welsh missionary, father of Nations.org and World Horizons – My Sea is Wide, and we are about to release a Christian novel called Going Astray.
We also have another imprint, Sunberry Books, which does author services (from critiques to proofing and editing services, or all the way to self-publishing).
(If you are interested in looking further, our web sites are in my signature below.)

JERRY JENKINS ANNOUNCES WEBINAR
At the Christian Writers Guild, tomorrow evening at 8 Eastern Time, we’re offering a live Webinar of one of our most popular workshops. We call it the Thick-Skinned Manuscript Critique, in which I show actual editing on anonymous manuscript submissions. Writers at our annual conferences consistently tell us this is a most-helpful approach, because editors don’t have the time (or the responsibility) to tell them what is specifically wrong with the manuscripts they reject.
Here I do just that. Doing a heavy edit and re-write (and brief commentary) on the first two pages of each of 6 different submissions, I walk you through what an editor would do if he or she had the time or the responsibility to tell the truth about the writing itself. Their job is to find publishable, purchasable material. At the Guild, we feel it’s our responsibility – and most helpful – to be specific and say why something is working or not working, salable or not salable.
If you’d like to sit in and watch on screen, I think you’ll find it valuable to your own writing. You’ll have the ability to interact too, asking questions live.
CWG member cost is $25; non-member cost is $45, and we’ll go for an hour or a little more.
Remember, this is set for tomorrow night, Tuesday, November 10, at 8 p.m., Eastern Time. You’ll see my smiling mug during the intro, then you’ll see the manuscripts and what has been done to them, then me again for the Q&A session.
The best way to get in on this at this late date is to contact the Christian Writers Guild directly, either by email (ContactUs@ChristianWritersGuild.com) or by calling (866) 495-5177 and asking for Janice or Leilani.

JAMES DOBSON LEAVES RADIO MINISTRY
Focus on the Family Founder and Chairman Emeritus James C. Dobson, Ph.D., will leave the ministry as its primary radio voice at the end of February, the ministry announced today.
Dr. Dobson's departure from the radio program and from official affiliation with the organization he founded in 1977 is just the "third chapter in a transition that began in 2003," when Dr. Dobson stepped down as Focus president, said Jim Daly, the ministry's president and CEO. It was a mutual decision between Dr. Dobson and the ministry's board of directors, which Dr. Dobson left in February of this year, Daly added.

BETHANY PRESS LAUNCHES BELIEVERSPRESS
Authors face an enormous challenge; a one in thousands chance of getting their manuscript published by major Christian publishers. Until now, the industry has only offered authors royalty and self-publishing models. Rejected authors are often left to fend for themselves. Some talented authors will give up. Others will try to solo-navigate the shifting currents of self/subsidy publishing and find themselves limited by the one-size-fits-all approach of these services.
BelieversPress, a new venture just launched by Bethany Press, offers multiple publishing tracks for authors where they control the process.
1. Royalty Publishing
In collaboration with ECPA, BelieversPress critiques and edits author proposals prior to posting on the ChristianManuscriptSubmissions.com website enabling agents and publishers to sort and filter for high quality submissions. Each of these proposals features a BelieversPress badge.
2. Independent Publishing
At BelieversPress, professional authors who pursue independent publishing can now access
Coaching and editorial services from Jeff Gerke, (longtime editor for the CBA industry, former editor at NavPress) and Barb Lilland Editorial Services (former senior editor, Bethany House Publishing)
Cover design from The DesignWorks Group or Dugan Design
Publicity services from B&B Media (clients include Charles Stanley, John C. Maxwell, Chuck Swindoll, Tim LaHaye, Melody Carlson, Bruce Wilkinson)
Marketing tools from Heinlein Publishing Services (Publishing Professional, 20+ Years: including executive positions with United Methodist Publishing House, Thomas Nelson, and Word Publishing)
Printing from Bethany Press (producer of almost 30% of the best-selling Christian paperbacks)
Sales and distribution through STL Distribution (the largest exclusively Christian distributor in North America).
Authors interested in submitting to agents and small publishers can receive mentoring, editorial, and proposal evaluation from D.C. Jacobson (Don Jacobson's group, former President of Multnomah Publishers) and The Writing Spa (Mary DeMuth) at BelieversPress.
BelieversPress counsels authors that if they cannot sell their books via platforms such as speaking, established ministries, or direct to readers through venues such as blogging, the internet, articles, etc. then they should not self-publish.
Agents and publishers can offer their authors a trustworthy team to help them to publish both their out- of-print books and unpublished manuscripts, further building their readership with the ability to sell directly through the author's website, the BelieversPress E- store, and to the trade through STL Distribution. Or, they can refer authors needing mentoring and further development to trusted professionals who can help them hone their skill and platform before re- submitting.

NAVPRESS OFFERS $5 BOOK DEAL
To help independent Christian retailers in the coming year, NavPress is introducing the $5 Book Deal. Beginning in January and continuing every other month through December 2010, independent Christian stores can purchase that month’s preselected title for $2.75 and then sell it for $5. Every book in the program is a NavPress top seller by a well-known author.
The $5 Book Deal lineup includes The Pursuit of Holiness by Jerry Bridges (January), Living the Resurrection by Eugene H. Peterson (March), Becoming a Woman of Excellence by Cynthia Heald (May), Dark Blue by Melody Carlson (July), Calm My Anxious Heart by Linda Dillow (September), and Abba’s Child by Brennan Manning (December).
“The $5 price has been the magic number over the past year or two in retail,” explains Eric Helus, NavPress sales manager. “Our yearlong offering helps make a sampling of our best-selling titles available at a price point that will allow the reader who might not be familiar with or interested in buy and read these books. At the same time, retailers can cross promote the $5 books with the respective author’s other titles to increase sales.”

CTI ADD DIGITAL MAGAZINE
Kyria.com has announced the release of the inaugural issue of their monthly digital magazine (digizine), titled "Born Identity: Chosen in Christ. Called to Influence."
In August 2009, Christianity Today International launched Kyria.com, a web-based resource for women who want to grow deeper in their relationship with Christ and in faithfully influencing the people around them to respond to Christ. The new paid- access website combines articles, blogs, downloadable resources, and now this monthly digizine.
Each issue of the Kyria digizine will be devoted to a specific aspect of spiritual formation or a spiritual discipline. Included is an interview with a woman who has devoted herself to becoming more like Christ, as well as practical tools, Bible studies, and challenging commentary.
Editor Ginger Kolbaba says, "Women are such powerhouses in their families, churches, and communities. It's exciting to lead and encourage them into greater depths of their faith through Kyria's resources. It's especially fulfilling to see women embrace the purposes and calling God has on their lives."
The December issue will be titled "The Discipline of Rest," and will feature an interview with Ruth Haley Barton along with other pieces by Keri Wyatt Kent, Brenda Jank, Catherine Hart Weber, and Lauren Winner.
To see the November 2009 issue of Kyria Digizine, visit kyria.com/digital/currentissue.html. To become a charter member of Kyria.com, visit kyria.com/membership.

ECPA MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION SERVICE
Publishers face an enormous challenge, hunting through mountains of submissions to find the few that meet their editorial needs. Finding new voices in this environment can feel impossible. ChristianManuscriptSubmissions.com (CMS), a program of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA), is the only proposal submission website designed at the request of the top Christian publishers to provide a solution to these problems. In collaboration with ECPA, BelieversPress (a subsidiary of Bethany Press International) is pleased to offer authors the opportunity to have their proposals professionally critiqued and edited before submission on the CMS website for viewing by Christian publishers. These proposals will feature a BelieversPress badge enabling publishers to easily find these high quality submissions. Badges will reflect what proposals have been critiqued, edited and endorsed.
CBA PRESIDENT STEPS DOWN
CBA President and CEO Bill Anderson stepped down from his position Friday, Oct. 30. Anderson joined CBA in 1978 from Moody Publishing as the association's first full-time convention manager. He became president in October 1985. Under Anderson's leadership, CBA transitioned from a trade association serving primarily booksellers to one serving constituents who provide a broad range of Christian resources and materials -- including music, gifts, apparel, specialty items, software and other product categories. Anderson has championed CBA in the media, both Christian and secular, and has helped raise awareness of Christian stores and the roles they play in their communities. He serves on numerous industry, ministry, education, leadership, and business organization boards. "Christian Retail has been given a high and holy calling, and we must be faithful to God and His Word. CBA plays a vital role in his industry, and the industry has a vital role in the Kingdom," Anderson said. "It's been an honor to have served here." Additionally, CBA Board Chairman Jim Whittaker of New Life Christian Stores resigned the same day, citing increased time demands that would come along with managing the transition process.

ABOUT THE 2010 CHRISTIAN WRITERS MARKET GUIDE
As this year speeds to a close and the 2010 market guide is in the final editing process, I decided it was time to let you know what will be happening with the guide for 2010. First, I have a new publisher--Tyndale House. And although this will be the 25th annual edition, the change in publishers is also an indication that there will be some changes over previous years.
* The release time will be about the same--around the first of January.
* The price will be lowered to $24.99 (currently $34.99).
* The CD will not come with the guide this year, but will still be available through me. If you are an automatic customer, I will include it for free. If not, it can be ordered with the guide for an additional $6.
* The CD contains the content of the guide, plus about 70 pages of additional resources for writers.
* Tyndale's plan is to have the guide entirely online sometime in the next 4-5 years. No details on that transition have been finalized as yet.
* You can now go to my Website (www.stuartmarket.com) and pre-order the 2010 guide, buy the 2009 guide at a year-end special discounted price, and sign up to get the guide automatically every year. If you pre-order the guide you will be among the first to get your copy.
* If you were previously signed up for the automatic order at $29.99 or $34.99, you will automatically be dropped to $24.99, plus postage. If you signed up at a lower price, that will not change.
* If you sign up to get the guide automatically every year as soon as it is available, you freeze the price at the current level--no matter how much it goes up in the future. You pay nothing when you sign up, and the guide will come with an invoice. (www.stuartmarket.com/click on Bookstore).

WRITERS' CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT
Would you like to increase your skills in writing? Expand your markets? Learn more about marketing your books? Discover tips to be your own publicist?
No matter where you are in your level of writing skills or needs, the Heart of America Christian Writers Network conference, Nov. 12-14 in Kansas City, is designed to help you!
Our faculty of excellent editors (including Ginger Kolbaba from Kyria, formerly Today's Christian Woman) is ready to teach you the nitty-gritty skills you need to keep making great sales--even in a tough economy. Besides several dozen workshops from which you can choose, we'll have three agents ready to see if you might be a client they can take on. We'll have a professional publicist on hand to help you explore the world of promoting your writing. We'll even have a professional photographer on hand giving you a great deal on those publicity shots magazines so often ask for.
We also offer several ways you can get personal feedback on your work.

SCREENWRITING COMPETITION
The first annual “Write of Passage” screenwriting competition is now open for entries, as announced today by founder John David Ware. The speed screenwriting competition aims to encourage new writers to enter the world of film. Write of Passage uses a team writing approach and offers finalist scripts the chance to be made into films during the “168 Film Project” competition.
In its 8th year, the 168 Film Project has launched more than 400 short films and many careers for would be filmmakers. The “168” model asks artists to create within strict limitations (a Theme, a Verse and a Week) and without second-guessing. Write of Passage will engage screenwriters with the same method.
“Pairing a writing contest with a production contest is a dream come true for writers who get to see their work,” noted Ware. “Real-world interaction between writers and producers will definitely raise the bar.”
Top scripts will compete for awards and $1,000 cash. Selected scripts will be eligible to be produced by 168 Film Project veterans. Resulting films will be screened during the Write of Passage Spotlight at the 168 Film
Festival, March 26-27, 2010 in Los Angeles, CA.
The contest is sponsored by Resurrection Pictures. “We love Write of Passage and look forward to meeting and working with new writers of faith,” said Resurrection President, Bill Harrity.
The prize package includes a meeting with Producer Ralph Winter (“X-MEN Origins: Wolverine”). In addition,writer/producers Luke Schelhaas (“Law and Order,” “Smallville”) and Brian Bird (“Not Easily Broken”) will
provide professional feedback to the top three writers.
Write of Passage will take place during the week of October 19th-26th, 2009. Submissions must be no more than 12 pages in length and will be based on a supplied, foundational scripture with the theme: “Hearing God.”
“We want to see positive portrayals of realistic people in redemptive, thought-provoking stories that honor God.
Screenplays should show authentic characters, not caricatures,” Ware said.
Writers who wish to enter must complete the registration and submit the $35 entry fee. Writers and producers are encouraged to participate in both Write of Passage and the 168 Film Project.
Entrants may sign-up as a Writer or apply to be a Regional Competition Producer (RCP). RCP’s administer the Write of Passage regional (semi-final) contests and judge the submissions. The best entries will be submitted to the finals in L.A. RCP entry is FREE, but RCP’s may not enter a screenplay in the contest.
RCP’s must apply for the RCP position via a written application available at www.168project.com. Signups are Aug. 20 - Oct. 18, 2009. Winners will be announced in November 2009. RCP’s will be featured in the 168 Film
Festival Program along with the top 20 writers. Both groups will receive VIP tickets to the 168 Film Festival.

NEW DESIGN FOR CHRISTIANITY TODAY
Christianity Today magazine debuts its redesign in the October issue with new features and a bold, new look. The magazine has a new orientation with well-defined sections and a new color palette.
Editor-in-Chief David Neff says, "Redesign a magazine and you could disorient some readers. But we hope that the redesigned Christianity Today will quickly give the reader a better sense of orientation. We believe the magazine is easier to use and more thoughtful than ever."
